Matthew Williams’s passion for architecture and design runs throughout his sculptures. He works with a range of natural and manmade materials, including bronze, steel and granite, exploring form in its fundamentality.
Williams privileges strong lines and sweeping curves and seeks to evoke movement and dynamism.
Williams started woodturning when he was sixteen and within a year had produced his own brand of woodcraft. After working in London for several years as a model maker, he was offered a position in Dubai. There his work was acquired by the crown prince of Dubai.
In June 2008 Williams relocated to New Zealand. He runs his own foundry, casting work for other leading New Zealand sculptors and continues to develop his own artistic practice.
Williams exhibits at Form Gallery, Christchurch; in several Auckland galleries; and at various outdoor sculpture events in New Zealand. He has sold pieces to The Kauri Museum in Northland and has work in private collections in Dubai, the UK, Canada and New Zealand.
